Understanding Statement Oct 8, 2026

How Statement understands your business

Every answer Statement gives is shaped by context specific to your business - your chart of accounts, your entities, how your team refers to things, and what's normal for you versus what's an anomaly. This is what lets you ask a question in your own words rather than in the exact terms your accounting system uses.

Connected systems

Statement's understanding of your business starts with the systems you connect - your accounting software, bank accounts, and any other data sources. These aren't just data feeds; they're the source Statement uses to build its picture of your chart of accounts, entities, and transaction history. Statement connects to the accounting and financial platforms you're already using, including:

  • Accounting - Xero, QuickBooks
  • Payments - Stripe, PayPal
  • Banking - Open Banking–connected accounts, covering most major banks If you're using another common financial platform, it's worth checking with support rather than assuming it isn't supported - Statement's connector list covers the common financial tools most businesses already run on.

Financial context

Beyond raw data, Statement builds an understanding of what that data means for your business specifically - your typical burn rate, your seasonal patterns, which entities roll up to which, what counts as a large vs. normal transaction for you. This is what separates "here are the numbers" from "here's what the numbers mean given how your business actually runs."

Memory

Statement uses the history of a conversation to keep follow-up questions connected. This includes earlier requests, clarifications, and results, so you can continue working without repeating every detail. For example, after asking about last month’s Stripe revenue, you can ask “How does that compare with the month before?” Statement uses the earlier discussion to understand the service and metric you mean. Returning to that saved conversation lets you continue with its context. Business context is the information available about your project, such as connected services, relevant accounts, and selected files. Conversation context captures what you’ve been discussing; business context provides the data and sources available for that work. This continuity applies within the saved conversation. Starting a new conversation should not be treated as automatically carrying over every preference, decision, or detail mentioned in previous chats.
