Application Builder

Building Applications Oct 8, 2026

The App Builder is where Statement turns a plain-language description into a working finance application - a dashboard, report, or automation you can reuse, share, and keep coming back to. This section covers how to build one, from your first prompt to publishing it for your team.

Overview

The Application Builder is the workspace where you turn a request into a running application. You describe what you want - "a dashboard showing AR aging by client" or "a weekly report on burn rate and runway" - and the Builder assembles it: pulling the right data sources, choosing an appropriate layout, and producing something you can immediately use, refine, or publish. Every application you build stays editable after creation - entirely through prompting. There's no visual editor to drag a chart or manually adjust a filter; if you want to change something, you describe the change the same way you described the original app, and the Builder updates it. This keeps editing in the same plain-language flow as creation, rather than switching to a different mode.

Create from prompt

The most direct way to build an application is to describe it in plain language, the same way you'd ask a colleague to put a report together. You don't need to specify data sources, chart types, or layout up front - Statement infers a reasonable starting point from the request and your connected data. Example prompt: “Create a Subscription Growth dashboard using my Stripe data. Show monthly recurring revenue, revenue growth over time, and revenue by subscription plan.” The app brings those views together: summary cards for key figures, a line chart showing the revenue trend, and a bar chart comparing plans. This helps you see how recurring revenue is changing and which plans contribute the most. You can refine it through conversation-for example, “Move the plan comparison above the trend chart” or “Add a short summary.” The app is saved so you can return to it and refresh its figures as updated data becomes available.

Create from template

If you don't want to start from a blank prompt, Statement ships pre-built templates for common financial functions - ready-made starting points for the reports and dashboards most businesses need, rather than a blank canvas every time. Examples include:

  • Burn Rate Calculator - tracks how quickly cash is being spent and projects runway
  • MRR Growth Calculator - monitors recurring revenue growth over time
  • Unit Economics Calculator - breaks down cost and revenue per unit to show margin and profitability at the unit level Starting from a template gives you a working application immediately, built around a common financial function, which you can then adjust the same way as any other app: by prompting changes to fit your specific business, entities, or preferences.
